Qantas Chairman John Mullen has taken a bold stand against corporate overreach into social and political issues.
In a refreshing move, he acknowledged that companies like Qantas made a mistake by lecturing the public on controversial matters, such as the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
Mullen remarked, “A lot of people saw corporate Australia lecturing them on what they should think (about the Voice). I think that’s where we (corporate Australia) made the mistake.
“Not that we supported the actual cause, but how we did it. How we lectured to people.”
He also recognized the disconnect between corporate elites and everyday Australians, noting, “People in the bush and other communities did not like to be told what to do by people from the east coast cities, particularly Sydney and Melbourne.”
This refreshing acknowledgment is a step toward refocusing Qantas on its core mission—delivering excellent service to customers and leaving divisive social campaigns to elected governments. We must encourage more corporate leaders to follow his example and prioritise serving their customers over pushing ideological agendas.
Please take a moment to thank John Mullen for standing up to corporate activism and steering Qantas back to its core responsibilities.
