Ask Mark Butler

Shocking new research has revealed that some migrant communities in Australia are giving birth to far more boys than girls — a disturbing imbalance that highlights sex-selective abortion is occurring in our country.

This form of gender discrimination, where baby girls are deliberately aborted simply because of their sex, is a silent and deadly injustice. It has no place in a society that claims to value equality and the dignity of every human being.

Health Minister Mark Butler must take immediate action to address this abhorrent practice.

A study published in the Global Public Health journal analysed over 2.1 million births in NSW and WA between 1994 and 2015. While Australian-born mothers had children within the natural range of 105 boys for every 100 girls, the ratios were vastly skewed among some migrant groups:

  • 133 boys per 100 girls for Chinese-born mothers
  • 132 boys per 100 girls for Indian-born mothers

Babies are clearly being aborted simply because of their sex.

Send a quick message now to Health Minister Butler asking him what he is going to do to address this deadly discrimination.
