At a time when open dialogue and freedom of expression should be protected, Tony Burke’s decision to block Israeli MP Simcha Rothman exposes a deep hypocrisy.
Burke claimed Rothman might “inflame division” — yet Australia has allowed far worse figures into the country: extremists, hate-preachers, and convicted radicals whose presence truly endangered social harmony. To single out Rothman — invited by Jewish community groups for a speaking tour — while granting visas to others with far more dangerous records is an indefensible double standard.
By cancelling Rothman’s visa just hours before his arrival, Burke has:
- Silenced a democratically elected parliamentarian from one of our closest allies.
- Undermined free speech and democratic dialogue.
- Exposed a hypocrisy that erodes trust in government decision-making.
This is not leadership — it is selective censorship, guided by political expediency.
