Make no mistake. This is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation to face Tasmanian families.

The Tasmanian Greens' Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2026 is seeking to restrict your right to parent YOUR children according to Christian ethics and the Christian worldview.

The very first clause on principles declares that a person's sexual orientation or gender identity “does not require fixing, changing or suppression.” That is not child protection. That is the State legislating an ideology and handing an unelected Commissioner the power to enforce it against anyone who thinks differently.

Your child. Your conversation. They are attempting to make it a crime.

This Bill puts government ideology into law.

Under this Bill, a parent can be charged with an indictable criminal offence for talking with their own child about sexuality or gender identity, and prosecutors do not even have to prove the child was harmed. None. Zero. Just the conversation itself, characterised the wrong way, is enough.

An adult who walks into a pastor's office and begs for prayer and support has no protection under this law. The Bill states outright that consent is not a defence. It does not matter that the person asked for help. It does not matter that they wanted it. The State has decided it knows better than they do.

“Protected” — until it isn't. Protected until the Commissioner disagrees with you!

Yes, the Bill lists prayer, religious teaching and parental conversation as “protected.” But read the fine print: every one of those protections evaporates the moment it's judged to be “part of a conversion practice.” That's not a protection. That's a trapdoor — and the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner holds the lever.

One-sided “health care”

The Bill exempts health practitioners whose treatment is “clinically appropriate” — but Australia's medical colleges currently recognise only ONE solution: affirmation. So a doctor who affirms is safe. A doctor who listens to a patient asking for something different is exposed. That is not medical neutrality. That is a licence to practise one ideology and criminalise the rest.

You will hear a lot about preventing coercion and abuse. This is not about stopping abuse. Abuse is already illegal.

Genuine coercion and abuse are already crimes in Tasmania. This Bill isn't filling a gap. It's building an entirely new machine to police belief, conscience, prayer and parenting.
